The American dog tick, often called the wood tick, is widely found across the U.S. but less so in the Rocky Mountain area. These ticks are brown with grayish-white markings, and their size can range from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. They have an oval, flattened shape, with larvae having six legs and adults having eight.
While they commonly feed on domestic dogs, they can also bite humans. They’re known to spread diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The highest risk of exposure occurs in spring and early summer. Regularly checking pets and keeping lawns tidy can help minimize tick infestations.
The Brown Dog Tick, recognized for its reddish-brown hue, frequently infests dogs and thrives in warmer regions like California. While dogs are their preferred hosts, Brown Dog Ticks may bite humans if no canine is present.
These ticks measure around 1/8″ as adults and can expand to 1/2″ after feeding. In their larval stage, they have six legs, but they develop eight legs as nymphs and adults. To prevent health risks, it’s important to remove these ticks from pets promptly. Make sure to check your pets often and maintain cleanliness in their living spaces to reduce tick populations.
The Pacific Coast tick thrives in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, making it common in Penryn’s natural areas. These ticks, known to bite humans, prefer cooler months, especially April and May, when they are most active. While adult ticks primarily feed on large mammals like deer, cattle, and horses, they also bite dogs and people.
Pacific Coast ticks can transmit diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis has been reported in cattle and ponies. Studies show that up to 11% of adult ticks carry the bacteria responsible for Pacific Coast tick fever, which can mimic symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is common in Pacific Coast states and British Columbia. It is the main carrier of Lyme disease in these areas. This tick is often found in forests, grasslands, and areas near water. It can also be present in scrub-shrub habitats. They are closely related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick but are found primarily on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from early December through early summer. Nymphs are abundant in April, May, and June. They feed on small animals like lizards and rodents. These immature ticks rarely bite humans or pets. Keeping your yard clear of debris and maintaining vegetation can help reduce their presence.
At Penryn Pest Control, our tick control begins with a careful inspection of your property by a trained professional. The technician will focus on locating tick-prone areas such as tall grass, shrubs, and shaded spots in the yard. These are ideal environments for ticks to thrive, so identifying them is key to effective treatment.
We’ll also check areas where your pets roam, as ticks often gather in such spots. This thorough examination ensures that our treatment plan is customized to your needs, offering a targeted approach to creating a tick-free zone for your home.
We start our tick control process by discussing your specific requirements, whether you need indoor, outdoor, or a combination of both treatments. For homes with pets, we typically recommend addressing both spaces for maximum effectiveness. This consultation ensures a plan tailored to your property.
Our technician will then inspect your yard, focusing on areas where ticks are most likely to hide. We treat up to half an acre with moisture-activated granules for long-term protection. For larger properties, additional coverage is available for a small fee. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer to apply the treatment precisely where needed.
After the first tick treatment, we provide a complimentary two-week follow-up. This allows us to address any ticks that may have recently hatched. Our technician will inspect both indoor and outdoor treated areas, ensuring no tick activity remains.
During this visit, we will reapply treatments as necessary to disrupt the tick life cycle and prevent any new infestations. Our goal is to keep your home and yard tick-free, offering safety and comfort for both your family and pets.
